Project and events

In the last decade, many developing countries in South Asia have suffered natural disasters or civil conflicts. Severe disaster destruction result in an overwhelming need to rebuild housing and infrastructure within a brief time. United Nations Development Programme has sought to make this reconstruction programme a "Build Back Better (BBB)" opportunity; however, gender inequality and marginalisation of people with disabilities remain a problem in many countries. Although the international community has sought to promote inclusion and resilience, the Post-Disaster Rebuilding (PDR) process still overlooks these sectors of society and their needs. This research aims to enhance the inclusion of women and people with disabilities in PDR-BBB programmes in Sri Lanka and achieved the following objectives.

  • Identify challenges faced by women and disabled.
  • Develop stakeholder mapping to understand governance and decision making.
  • Determine the gap between policy and practice in terms of inclusion of gender and disability.
  • Influence policy and practice in improving the inclusivity of women and people with disabilities in post-disaster development.
