Cleator Lovehaven

In collaboration with Surya Prakash Siva, our project delves into the concept of weddings as multicultural events. Through investigations of macroeconomic impacts of industries and trade in Cumbria and the UK, as well as key impacts of socioeconomic trends and Covid, we identified key potentials of the wedding industry for marketing the UK abroad and locally, as well as Cumbria’s rich landscapes and heritage markers for championing sustainable conservational tourism.

Featuring a revitalized flax mill and former home of the famous Kangol hat, new halls and supporting buildings; our proposed scheme Cleator Lovehaven is set in the site of Cleator Mill in Cleator Moor. With romantic landscapes inspiring the likes of L.S.Lowry, it is set between the West Coast of Cumbria and the beautiful Lake District. Beautiful fields of heather and apple orchards now mark the expanses of the grounds, and light filtering through maple and birch trees form warm glows of dappled light on earthy sandstone facades and lavender avenues. Having carefully considered the integration of cultural backgrounds, customs, and beliefs into Cleator Lovehaven’s design, we aim to craft the perfect wedding experience through inclusive buildings and flexible measures.

As a holistic site set to host multicultural weddings of different timings and arrangements, the site also serves as a public park for locals who used to walk the estate reminiscing its glory days. The scheme strives to show how we can utilize and shape our environment in consideration of nature and longevity, rewilding areas with conservation in mind. With the reuse of materials and motives to adapt to contemporary society, the sensitive and multifaceted nature of wedding rituals and customs are celebrated in a collaborative event space, as a harmonious symbiosis between nature, man and manmade.
