The Cable Car Terminal: Connecting Cumbria

A journey into the heart of Cumbria’s contrasting landscapes was embarked upon, leading to the envisioning of a project that bridges not only the geographical divide between its eastern and western regions but also the stark economic disparities highlighted by uneven tourist visitation and scenic appeal. A cable car system was envisioned as a dynamic solution—designed to connect the lesser-known areas of East Cumbria with the well-visited landscapes of the Lake District and Scafell Pike in the west.

This cable car terminal is intended not just as a point of transit but as a center for community and cultural exchange. A gallery is to be housed within, telling the storied past of Cumbria and narrating the tale of the terminal’s creation, inviting locals and visitors to delve into a shared history. A bustling market is also designed to emerge, fostering local businesses and creating jobs, thus turning the terminal into a lively hub of economic activity.

Beyond merely facilitating movement, the terminal extends into a skywalk, allowing for a stepping out into the open air, close to the River Ehen, and a true immersion in the surrounding natural beauty. The design includes a living green roof, where a sanctuary for all forms of biodiversity is provided, offering a place where nature and human presence coexist harmoniously, fostering the principle of integrating humans into nature in a respectful manner, rather than dominating it.

Through this project, it is aimed to weave together the threads of mobility, economic vitality, and environmental respect into a cohesive fabric that revitalizes the entire region, transforming the cable car terminal not just into a means to travel but into a destination itself, where every journey enriches both the traveler and the land.
