In collaboration with Yowhue at MSA's infrastructurespace atelier, I'm proud of our recent project focusing on leveraging the algae ecosystem for sustainable development in Cumbria, UK. This innovative initiative explores integrating algae production into building facades to address environmental challenges and foster a green economy. Algae offer diverse applications such as biofuels, pharmaceuticals, with substantial environmental benefits such as carbon absorption and wastewater treatment.

The project explores incorporating algae photobioreactor (APBR) facades in buildings to enhance energy efficiency by converting solar energy into biomass, providing shading, and sequestering CO2 for passive cooling and reduced emissions. Various design iterations and case studies are conducted to showcase algae's potential in creating eco-friendly buildings adaptable to their surroundings.

Capitalizing on Cumbria's unique environmental conditions, the project positions algae cultivation as a sustainable economic driver, particularly in infrastructure, agriculture, and tourism sectors. This innovative approach merges architectural design with biotechnological advancements, turning environmental challenges into economic opportunities.

Advocacy for the development of algae infrastructure aims to drive sustainable economic growth and innovation while revitalizing local economies and promoting environmental sustainability. The comprehensive integration of algae in architectural design presents a compelling case for algae as a cornerstone of Cumbria's future development.
