Todmorden - Framed in Film

Todmorden, located in between the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire, is a community town with a small and tight-knit community, with a rich history and beautiful landscape, one which deserves a larger audience to appreciate.

The Todmorden Film Center aims to capture the essence of Todmorden through making films. Film viewers from around the world would be intrigued by these films and come and explore Todmorden for themselves. The film center also provides local citizens with a range of activities and communal spaces, inviting them to visit the center often and to engage with the town square where the film center is located.

Todmorden Film Centre is a space in which the consumers and producers coexist closely, which facilitates interactions between the two groups. Through these interactions, the consumers would learn to appreciate the filmmaking process and inspire them to be film producers themselves. This cycle of filmmaking inspiration would grow a network of filmmakers in Todmorden and foster a long-lasting film industry/culture in the town.

An important feature of the building is the rectangular glass screen. The activities of the town square are framed under the cantilevered screen, acting as a “film” for the users of the film center to enjoy during the day. At night, a projector screen is rolled down from the top of the building and turns the town square into a cinema for the people. (refer to image ten.)
