Chiroptera in the City
In the heart of Manchester, as the sun sets, rises the beast of the dark. A fierce hunter awakened from deep sleep who silently contributes to our ecosystem, the Chiroptera, commonly known as Bats. These mammals are rapidly declining globally, losing their precious homes to the rise in urbanization. The project focuses on creating collective action to protect and preserve these nocturnal creatures and acknowledge their vital role as pollinators and pest controllers.
The design project aims to develop effective strategies for conserving Chiroptera species (Bats) in Manchester by considering the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and climate change. The project focuses on evaluating the status of bat species in the region, identifying priority areas for conservation, and proposing guidelines for designing urban spaces that are friendly to bats. The project engages different policies and stakeholders to deliver a comprehensive plan for improving bat habitats with the necessary policy changes.
With an understanding of the limitations of different areas, the project aims to lay a foundation of a diverse yet effortless planting strategy that promotes biodiversity, which can be adopted into any design scheme to create more climate resilient and sustainable EcoCentric landscapes for the future.
