My interests in architecture are focused around addressing the climate emergency through innovative design. Modular design within architecture is something I wish to experiment more with in the future and I hope to get the change to be a part of a team which is designing innovative projects. I am also passionate about the continuation of vernacular architecture by using local materials in the Greater Manchester area such as sandstone since this builds an environment set to last.
My 3rd year project has been focused in the centre of Todmorden where I have designed a community focused library/ civic centre. Around the structure, there is a lot of interaction with the context of the site providing shops, cafés and seating in order to create new revenue and social spaces within the centre of Todmorden. These additions were intended to create simple ways which would help to tie the surrounding context together. The tower acts as a tourism hub providing a perfect spot to admire the town and learn about the history within the tower’s digital archive floors without disturbing the context. The main hall within this building makes good use of the south side to provide rooftop outdoor spaces and windows to provide natural lighting into a space accessible for the community.
Another big part of my architectural experience has been experimenting with technical design. My 3rd year project includes a range of technical elements including Photovoltaic retractable Louvres on the roof and openable, sliding windows on the ground floor. These systems were design to allow fluidity and interactivity for users, in regard to the building’s use, to help respond to the climate.
