Carving History
My project delves into creating a public library and community hub for the town of Todmorden. Taking inspirations from the local vernacular and the use of heavy set stone, the library I have designed aims to embody the almost monolithic qualities seen within the urban grain. By pushing this quality I have ‘carved’ into the encasing wall and created a series of spaces, both interior and exterior, which the users can experience.
Understanding and connecting with the surrounding natural beauty of Todmorden was a key driver of mine and resulted in a series of carefully selected views, which in turn, have crafted the spaces within. Providing an adaptable and sustainable structure as the center of a post-industrial town is something very important to me ensuring that the building can grow with the people that use it, providing for many generations ahead.
