Commercial Street: Todmorden Arts Centre

Situated along the Rochdale Canal corridor, the project proposes a new arts centre and community hub on a vacant post-industrial site, aiming to revitalise neglected space along the waters edge. The project aims to explore how integrating social infrastructures within a declining post-industrial fabric can enhance social, environmental, and economic resilience.

Defined by the existing retaining wall found on site, the scheme is perceived as an inward facing collection of community rooms that provide spaces for the display and production of large scale art, as well as additional spaces that address missing community facilities throughout Todmorden.

The proposal celebrates the ordinary and everyday aspects of Todmordens vernacular, through the use of familiar elements and material nuances that are embedded within the new architecture.
