Agri-topia
I'm Mastura Ramlan, an architecture student with a fervent belief in design's ability to empower individuals and communities. This philosophy lies at the heart of my final year project, co-created alongside Amira Batrisyia. We turned our focus towards the agricultural sector, acknowledging the immense contribution of farmers while recognizing the hardships they endure. This master's thesis delves into the possibility of creating a haven for agriculture in Cumbria, inspired by the ideals of "utopian agriculture." This model farming community, situated in Cleator Mill within Cleator Moor, Cumbria, will prioritize sustainability, social equity, and harmony with nature. Through meticulous research and by engaging directly with farmers, we prioritized a deep understanding of their needs and aspirations. The project aims to breathe new life into the rural agricultural community by incorporating design principles associated with utopia and characteristics reminiscent of paradise. This translates into three key objectives: bolstering the regional economy, promoting the mental well-being of farmers, and fostering a positive and uplifting work environment within the agricultural sector.
This project ignited a spark within me, a passion for leveraging architecture as a catalyst for positive social change. It instilled the importance of empathetic design – a practice that delves into the lived experiences of users to craft spaces that empower them. This extends far beyond the agricultural realm. I am driven by a fervent desire to explore the multifaceted applications of architecture in addressing the needs of diverse communities. Whether it's designing inclusive and accessible public spaces, fostering sustainable and resilient urban environments, or promoting social interaction through architectural interventions, I am committed to utilizing my skills to create a positive and lasting impact on the world.
