Salty Stockport

In my project, I created a culturally inclusive space in Stockport that educates both majority and minority groups about diverse cultures, fostering understanding and comfort for all. This space is especially welcoming to minority groups, offering a 'home away from home' atmosphere. The core of this project is a food school focusing on fusion cooking between Lebanese, Indian, and Turkish cultures, three of the most popular cuisines in Stockport. My aim is to teach people about each of these rich cultures and cuisines through traditional cooking methods while also experimenting with innovative techniques like 3D printing food.

I always strive to enhance cultural competence in my projects to work effectively in diverse global contexts, engaging with clients, communities, and stakeholders from various cultural backgrounds. This project has provided me the opportunity to delve into design development while continuously learning about new cultures through the use of spaces, environments, and equipment.

The facade design of the building was inspired by salt crystals, a common seasoning across all these cuisines, symbolizing unity and the essential nature of cultural diversity. The facade features intricate patterns that mimic the crystalline structure of salt, creating a visually striking and meaningful exterior. Additionally, I incorporated an innovative structural support system, experimenting with different models and iterations to achieve the safest and most appropriate method. This efficient use of space allowed for the creation of an area underneath the building, dedicated to growing herbs and fresh vegetables, which are essential ingredients in Lebanese, Indian, and Turkish cooking.

Inside the food school, the design includes state-of-the-art kitchens equipped with modern appliances and traditional tools, creating a versatile environment where participants can learn and experiment. Each cooking station is designed to be adaptable, allowing for a seamless transition between traditional and contemporary cooking methods. The school also features interactive learning spaces where participants can engage with the cultural histories and culinary traditions of each cuisine through multimedia presentations and hands-on workshops.

Overall, this project not only bridges cultural gaps through culinary education but also utilizes creative design and sustainable practices to create a harmonious and inclusive environment.
