Echoes of Renewal: Crafting Musical Spaces from Mill to Bunker
At its core, the thesis sought to uncover how a perception of place, heritage, and community identity, intertwine with music and creative expression, serving as the driving force for the revitalisation of two post-industrial sites in Todmorden.
The project explored two concepts: solace and collaboration. A musician’s retreat is imagined in a derelict nuclear monitoring bunker 3km North of the town. Complementing this, a former mill complex in the town centre is adaptively re-used and reinterpreted to create a cultural venue, visitor accommodation and recording studios.
The design strategy responded to local needs and challenges, relating to a boost in the visitor economy, while providing suitable space to facilitate creative enterprise. The theoretical approach referenced historical typologies and forms, reinterpreting these to create architecture symbolic of industry and adaptable for future aspirations.
