Warp and Weft
To weave, or 'wefan' as old English states, has been a long part of Stockport's history, but global history. Woven fabrics have contributed to cultural identity and community. Textile mills were key in the economic development of the historic town.
But we have left the 17th century behind. A new age has emerged, one of digital influence and novel methods of fabrication. Thus came the conception of 'Warp+Weft'. Here traditional wefan is explored, but the intersection between fabric and technology is key in building use.
Members of the community, young and old may meet through classes and learn how to use the loom. They may enjoy a coffee at the adjacent cafe. Material specialists may test alongside 3d printers to explore low-waste fabrication. The building fabric is woven into the space between three existing buildings, which will intergrate with the new to fulfil the purposes of the programme.
