Blurring The Boundary - South Manchester Substation & Bird Dating Tower

Our project aims to challenge the traditional divide between human-built environments and the natural world by proposing a novel approach to the re-design of the South Manchester Substation with an addition of Bird Tower. Inspired by the philosophy of animal aided design, our overarching goal is to blur the boundaries between humans and non-humans, both physically and psychologically, fostering equality and harmonious co-existence between humans and animals.

Central to our design strategy is the integration of elements that cater to the needs of both humans and avian inhabitants. The substation is envisioned as multifunctional spaces that not only serve their primary electrical infrastructure purpose but also provide habitats and nesting and mating opportunities for local bird populations. Similarly, the bird towers are designed to offer shelter and refuge for various bird species, while also incorporating aesthetic and functional elements for human enjoyment and interaction.

Through this innovative approach, we seek to challenge the exploitation of animals by humans and promote a more inclusive and sustainable relationship between species. By embracing the principles of animal aided design, we aim to create spaces that facilitate mutual respect, understanding, and co-existence between humans and animals, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious and equitable world.
