Archipelago of 'Urban Playgrounds'
My project explores the transformative potential of counter-cultures, such as skateboarding and street art, to challenge conventional urban planning approaches and foster vibrant, inclusive public spaces in Mayfield. Current strategies often marginalize these activities, perceiving them as disruptive rather than beneficial. Therefore, my project recognizes the need to shift how these communities are treated in Manchester's public spaces.
By re-activating neglected sites in Mayfield, I propose inclusive community spaces, promoting creative expression and ownership, and demonstrating that inclusive design leads to vibrant, equitable environments. This aims to challenge current planning practices and support Manchester City Council's 2025 goal of an 'Equitable City', while aspiring to set a precedent for future urban planning efforts, showcasing how integrating counter cultural activities can create dynamic, welcoming, and innovative urban spaces.
