The Allotment Project
The main goal of the project was to ensure the continuity of Todmordens vibrant community by supporting the town’s “market heart", a sector sadly in national decline.
The project collaborates with Incredible Edible, a local climate organisation founded in Todmorden. They transform disused plots into “edible” green infrastructure. These plots promote communal self-sufficiency and sustainability by cultivating organic produce, contributing to food security, biodiversity, and the local economy.
The Allotment Project establishes a centralised hub in the heart of the town, connecting these plots together. Within the project, a community garden and library help further Todmordens sustainable development, while a new public square provides a venue for food festivals, promoting tourism to the markets. All of this interconnected by a green pedestrian promenade.
The multi-pavilion design and central courtyard mimic values of traditional Chinese gardens, creating sheltered introspective learning spaces. To embody the character of Todmorden, the design sticks to a local material palette. The narrow, valley-like promenade and pitched roof designs pay homage to the vernacular architecture of the nearby markets.
