RURAL ART CENTRE FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

“To investigate ways to enhance accessibility in rural environments for the visually impaired through artistic initiatives and inclusive design.”

There is a growing need for inclusive design to ensure accessibility for people with visual impairment. However, most accessible buildings are located in larger cities, while rural areas lack such tailored structures. Big cities may not suit everyone’s lifestyle and can be particularly overwhelming for those with disabilities. Providing accessible facilities in the countryside offers a valuable alternative to bustling city life.

The proposed project aims to transform Crescent Mill, an existing textile mill and steel foundry, into a pioneering initiative that breaks down these barriers to the natural environment. This will be achieved through artistic workshops, sensory galleries, and creating spaces for discussions to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the blind and partially sighted. Additionally, the project showcases design principles that can be applied to other adaptive reuse projects.
