Todmade: Todmorden Tapestry

“Todmade: A Todmorden Tapestry” encapsulates a comprehensive approach to addressing the recurring flood emergencies in Todmorden, viewed through the lens of community resilience and architectural innovation. Throughout this endeavor, I’ve gained insights into diverse perspectives of design and architecture, weaving narratives around climate change, contextual relevance, significance, and functional programming.

NARRATIVE

Initiating the project in Studio 1 involved conceptualizing Todmorden’s follies as pivotal nodes, serving as gathering points and emergency hubs linking to proposed structures in the town. Central to this narrative is the integration of a sports and community center, designed to double as a flood shelter during emergencies. A meticulous mapping of time and usage requirements has laid the groundwork for a cohesive tapestry of functionality.

CONTEXT

Situated in Todmorden, a market town nestled in the Pennine ranges of North West England, the project is deeply rooted in the town’s rich historical and industrial heritage. Embracing the existing urban fabric, including markets, halls, and town squares, the design aims for seamless integration and regeneration, envisaging economic revitalization and community well-being amidst the layers of history.

SIGNIFICANCE

The dual-purpose functionality of the proposed building amplifies its significance within the site, envisaging economic prosperity and social resilience. By accommodating both recreational and emergency needs, the envisioned structure promises to foster inclusivity and security, catering to the diverse demographics of Todmorden.

FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMME

The transformation of the Pollination Street gardens and adjacent parking lot stems from a thorough exploration of the site’s latent potential. Leveraging its historical backdrop and scenic surroundings, the design envisions a sports facility and bouldering activity, seamlessly blending with the rolling hills and riverside vistas.

By synthesizing these principles, the project culminates in a harmonious dual-use scheme that not only addresses the immediate needs of flood resilience but also celebrates the intrinsic character of the site, ushering in a new era of purposeful urban development.
