Todmorden's Time Capsule

Located in the centre of the small market town, Todmorden, I started this project with an investigation of experience and place based on Gordon Cullen’s Serial Vision (1961).

The new library promotes a strategy that establishes a relationship with history, topography and the culture of the community in Todmorden, with an insight into the building’s future. The form and roofscape emulate the architectural typology of previous textile weaving mills which were once located on the site, with the building housing an archive space, containing artefacts which reflect the rich history of the town. The library appears as a contemporary form which sits organically in the town, the pitched roofscape feels connected to the wider site, aided by the choice of materiality for the façade. The proposed scheme imagines how the library can grow with the changing future, whilst being situated in a town which is closely linked to the past.
