The Communal Circle: A Subterranean Airport for the Lake District

A proposal for a 660 square-foot air hub for future VTOLF aircrafts, which seeks to rethink airport infrastructure and change the value of transport from efficient to experiential.

Position

To Balance the Connection and Disconnection between Cumbrian Locals and Tourists through an Experience.

Overlooking the data mapping, additional routes or land vehicles do not resolve the slow unsustainable movement of Cumbria. My proposal is an air hub that rethinks the infrastructure needed for future aircarfts. The aircrafts were chosen because they are sustainable, don’t need a runway, and their range succeeds the perimeters of Cumbria. The proposal accommodates both tourists and locals on a regional and national scale creating the balance and experience in which the position addresses.

The Joby Aircraft

The transport around Cumbria. Inward travel that reaches both local and touristic areas.

The Airlander 10

The transport to UK Airports from Cleator Moor and Carlisle Airport (docking stations). A Scenic Tour circulating The Lakes. Access to work outside of Cumbria for locals and an attractive route inside Cumbria for tourists.

International Attraction

Responding to the true scale of The Lake District for an appropriate form of transport.

Rethinking Standard Infrastructure

An airborne transport system with no runways and an experiential aim.

Connection

Social and economical. Tourists can attend to rural areas and locals have an obtainable network around the UK, economic benefits.

Natural Environment

The experiential transport brings attention to the harsh landscape whilst considering its own affect on the environment. The vehicles will pursue for zero carbon.

Disconnection

Between locals and tourists in terms of transport so that citizens can travel to work and visitors can arrive to their destinations in unison.
