Welcome to the ADD (Architectural Digital Design) programme at MSA, where we offer an innovative digital literacy curriculum for students at all levels. Our core curriculum immerses students in essential digital literacies such as graphic representation, technical drawing, 3D modelling, BIM, fabrication, and sustainable carbon simulation. These ‘essential’ skills are carefully aligned with project briefs to ensure students gain practical, real-world experience while mastering complex techniques that are highly valued in professional practice.

In addition to our core curriculum, we offer an optional advanced digital literacy programme that is available to all MSA students. This programme delves into cutting-edge digital skills, including coding and computation, robotics, algorithmic design, game engines, animation, AR&VR, drone photogrammetry, and AI. By providing access to these advanced technologies, we encourage even the most advanced students to reach new heights in their digital design capabilities. To support all our students, we offer one-on-one tutorials with a member of the ADD team five days a week, ensuring personalized guidance and that no student is left behind.

One of the distinguishing features of our programme is our emphasis on encouraging students to develop their unique visual design language. We advocate for a balanced approach that values both analogue and digital methods. Here, students are encouraged to explore various forms of analogue, hybrid, and digital skills to develop innovative and alternative methods of representation.

This year, the rise of AI tools in academia has presented significant challenges and opportunities. At MSA, we understand that AI, like the computer, rendering engine, and 3D printer before it, is another tool poised for adoption in professional practice. Consequently, we have developed a framework to guide students on the ethical considerations and appropriate use of AI tools with design cognition in mind.

Our reach has also expanded beyond the school this year. Highlights include a student trip to the annual BIM event in Leicester, where 50 students engaged with digital-themed talks featuring speakers from renowned firms such as BIG and Foster and Partners. Additionally, we launched the ADD++ lecture series, inviting architectural designers from leading practices like Zaha Hadid Architects to discuss their digital workflows and adoption of digital skills in the real world. We also hosted an AI Day event with notable speakers such as Professor Neil Leach and Will Garner, who explored the ethical considerations and future implications of AI in architecture.

Behind the scenes, we have worked diligently to refine our DELTA (Digitally Enhanced Learning Teaching and Assessment) strategy. This initiative has led to the development of a cleaner, more consistent Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for both staff and students.

Our students continue to benefit from access to two state-of-the-art CAD Labs, open and remote access computing, environmental monitoring equipment, a student laptop loan system, VR headsets, iPads, a Drone, and over 183 industry-standard software packages. The ADD team is fully equipped to support students in utilizing these resources to their fullest potential.

We would like to extend special thanks to Reiji Nagaoka (PhD Student) and Chen Qi (Architectural Assistant) for joining the ADD team this year. Also special thanks to our GTA’s Alina Iskrytska, Yung Yu Wu, Leila Hooshmand and Cameron Griffin. Their professional input has significantly enhanced the student experience at MSA this past year.
