Little Explorers Nursery
In Burnley, a significant number of single parents are facing financial problems, and they lack the option to afford childcare for their kids while they go to work. This situation only perpetuates the cycle ofpoverty, as households cannot generate adequate income, and children cannot develop greater skills at home. In order to break the poverty cycle and support the upcoming generations in Burnley, a nursery was designed for children aged 3 to 5 so they can participate, fostering the development of their emotional, social, and cognitive abilities. This facility would allow parents to attend work with peace of mind, knowing their children are in a safe and nurturing environment.
The nursery design incorporates educational spaces, play areas, outdoor environments, and a dining hall that will serve meals for children who may not have access to regular meals at home due to financial limitations. The main goal is to enhance children’s confidence as they transition to primary school, providing them with an enjoyable and enriching experience within the building.
In addition, the building tries to keep its programme simple. Since the primary users of the building are children, its practicality and efficiency are what is needed for them to get around and explore it. In addition, circular economy principles had been addressed when thinking about the structural and materiality strategy of the place, as the building should not only be constructed and demolished but generate zero waste throughout its Life cycle. Finally, the building design intends to follow RIBA sustainable outcomes to comply with 2030 sustainable goals
