The Immersive Distillery
Being in the Making atelier meant that a lot of my design process was brought to life through model making. My initial idea stemmed from papermetrics, and smashed glass. From experimenting with paper in 3.1, the idea of a folded plate structure was formed. The structure is self supporting which creates vast open spaces that are unique in its surrounding. Each ‘pyramid’ of my design holds a different step of the process as you move through.
The name ‘The Immersive Distillery' came from the fact I wanted to create somewhere that not only is a fully functioning distillery, but somewhere that is educational, a social space and more importantly, an experience. My design will immerse the visitors in my building and the process. How I accomplished this, is by taking my visitors on a journey through each distilling process allowing them to understand and appeciate each step. They eventually enter into a space purposed for relaxing; to enjoy the whiskey they have just been educated about and watched be made in front of their eyes.
My aim for the project was to be as sustainable as possible, using local materials and planting trees on the site. I would also be prefabricating the frame of site to lower emissions, whilst creating a design that can be adapted and reused for other projects around the UK. I also ensured that the building was ergonomic, with the users of the building being comfortable. There is lots of natural sunlight from the surrounding windows and skylights and natural ventilation through the vents.
