This agreement marks the beginning of a pilot case study to examine disability inclusion in post-disaster rebuilding efforts in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has faced multiple natural and man-made disasters, with recent floods and landslides (2022–2024) causing significant damage. While post-disaster rebuilding programs emphasize inclusion, the needs of disabled individuals are often overlooked. This study, co-designed with international and local stakeholders, aims to identify gaps and propose strategies to improve disability-inclusive rebuilding efforts.
As part of this initiative, Prof. Yamuna Kaluarachchi and Prof. Jennifer Perera, Joint Coordinator of CENWOR, signed the agreement. The research will involve literature reviews, stakeholder interviews, and engagement with disabled individuals to assess current challenges and opportunities for better inclusion.
The findings will provide key insights to inform future research and policy recommendations, ensuring that disability perspectives are integrated into disaster recovery programs in Sri Lanka and the broader South Asian region.
