Elevated Village Green

Elevated Village Green reimagines the Mancunian Way as a public health infrastructure rather than a traffic barrier. The project transforms the bridge deck and its adjacent vacant land into a continuous daily route where commuting, exercise, rest and social interaction can happen together. On the bridge, flexible village green spaces provide open ground for sitting, watching, gathering, informal play and mental recovery. Outdoor sports courts, including basketball and tennis areas, create active nodes for physical movement. On the vacant land beside the bridge, indoor sports spaces provide sheltered facilities, changing rooms, storage and entrances that connect the ground to the elevated public realm. The typology responds to the fragmentation of contemporary urban health, where work, commuting, exercise and relaxation are usually separated into different destinations. Instead, this project embeds health into the spaces people pass through every day, turning the Mancunian Way into a linear common between residential communities, workplaces and city-center movement. It proposes a repeatable bridge-based typology for everyday wellbeing.
