URBAN PLAYHOUSE
The Urban Playhouse proposes a theatre and cultural complex spanning the Mancunian Way, addressing the highway's role as an infrastructural barrier that has historically fragmented the urban fabric between Hulme and Deansgate.
The scheme places vehicular movement underground, reclaiming the surface as a continuous pedestrian realm and reestablishing spatial and social connectivity between two historically disconnected neighbourhoods. Above, the complex operates as a complete theatrical ecosystem : housing a traverse-stage theatre with a hydraulic, movable platform system, alongside workshops, exhibition spaces, and performer facilities.
The stage configuration places audiences in direct opposition, collapsing the boundary between spectator and performance and producing a collective experience. Rooted in Hulme's rich cultural heritage and Manchester's broader tradition of civic performance, the project positions theatre not merely as cultural infrastructure, but as a mechanism for urban repair and collective identity.
