The Storymaker
The Storymaker is a work that aims to inspire creativity and adventure through the medium of storytelling. It’s rooted in Crewe as its context and draws from the history and iconography in its design, from the grand entrance feature, to the tiling on the floor, to the stories it facilitates being told in its walls.
The Storymaker is a tool for visitors, allowing them to gather, stay, and explore within spaces that are designed for them. The building is a story in itself, clad in materials that will change as it settles and ages into its context, over time and with use. It is designed from the inside out in a human centric way that is thought provoking and stimulating for inquisitive minds of any age. It is designed to become a meeting place in the heart of Crewe Town Centre with a variety of spaces that are designed around storytelling in some form or another. From audiobook pods, to workshops, to seating spaces, to theatres, there is somewhere for everyone to come and enjoy and become part of the story of The Storymaker, and the town.
To top it off, the project creates a little oasis of greenery in the centre of an otherwise lacking town, with pockets of nature sprinkled throughout its floors, allowing the natural world and the people to be side by side.
It is a representation of a building and the people working together to create their own stories of place, people and purpose, with the resident Storymaker on hand on the top floor to trickle down creativity. Together, The Storymaker becomes an icon and a landmark to reinvigorate the town and help to bring it back to its former glory – a place where everything tells a story.
