The Metabolic Mill

Metabolic Mill reimagines waste infrastructure as a visible and participatory part of urban life. Located within the evolving post-industrial landscape of Manchester, the project transforms conventional waste-processing systems into a civic and ecological framework integrating recycling, greenhouse cultivation, public circulation and active mobility infrastructure.

Rather than concealing industrial processes beyond the city, the proposal positions waste as a shared urban resource. Heavy processing facilities are embedded within a robust infrastructural base, while elevated greenhouse structures and public walkways create productive environmental spaces above. A continuous circulation spine connects industrial, ecological and public programmes vertically, allowing visitors to engage with processes of material recovery, cultivation and energy transformation.

The project responds to Manchester’s ambitions for environmental resilience, cleaner mobility and post-carbon urban development by merging infrastructure with public accessibility. Drawing from the city’s industrial heritage and speculative future imaginaries, Metabolic Mill proposes a new architectural relationship between ecology, industry and collective urban life.
