Make the Commons!

Make the Commons reclaims the overlooked edges of Scholes, Wigan as shared ground for everyday life, turning alleyways, local greens spaces and vacant shoplots into a living civic framework. Rather than a fixed programme, the project operates as an open structure where uses can shift, overlap, and evolve through participation. Spaces for care, exchange, making, rest and encounter are layered to encourage continual re-occupation of the ordinary.

Through speculative layering and incremental interventions, the project imagines the precinct not as a site of absence, but as a field of possibilities, where small and repeated actions accumulate into collective presence. The proposal works across street, threshold, and interior, dissolving the boundary between building and public realm. It invites pause, participation, observation, and connection as everyday urban rituals. In doing so, Make the Commons reframes underused urban fabric as a shared commons, activated through collective presence and everyday practice.
