A Guide to Building Belonging
‘A Guide to Building Belonging’ explores how belonging can be constructed through self-build architecture.
Responding to conventional housing models that prioritise permanence, standardisation, and top-down control, the project develops a self-build manual that guides users through designing and constructing temporary dwellings from reclaimed materials.
Developed through 1:1 prototyping, the project proposes reversible and participatory methods of construction through which users can shape their own sense of belonging.
The prototype features a modular structure formed from reclaimed scaffolding boards, recycled textile insulation, adaptable cladding systems, and customisable internal finishes that allow identity, memory, and traces of inhabitation to become embedded within the architecture.
