CITY AS A CANVAS

Cities are made up of spaces, people and narratives.

The design project centers on Riga, the capital of Latvia, and its rich historical narratives. It highlights the deep connection between the city and its residents, shaped by shared experiences through time. Despite facing challenges like wars, industrialization, heritage preservation, and the Soviet era, Riga has emerged resilient and continues to thrive.

The City As A Canvas (Studio A- Studio B) project presents an exciting opportunity to reimagine the relationship between the city, its residents, and the Daugava River. The goal is to transform Riga’s urban landscape into a vibrant, sustainable hub that strengthens these connections. Using participatory design methods, the initiative involves residents, universities, and local businesses in the planning process. Temporary installations and events will help test ideas and engage the public in reshaping their urban environment. By reimagining Riga’s urban fabric, the project celebrates the city’s endurance and lays the foundation for a sustainable, vibrant future.

Another key part of the project is Studio C- Power2play, which focuses on the transformation of the historic Andrejsala power plant, a significant industrial landmark in Riga. The project aims to preserve the building’s distinctive character while adapting it for contemporary use. The revitalized site will feature urban play areas, a museum of industrial heritage, a market space for local artisans, and flexible studios for creative enterprises.

The overarching aim is to create adaptable, multifunctional architecture that evolves alongside the community’s needs. The new Andrejsala power plant will not only honor Riga’s industrial past but also serve as a dynamic cultural hub, fostering creativity, community engagement, and economic vitality. It will bridge Riga’s history with its future, creating a lasting connection between the city and its residents.

As an aspiring sustainable urban designer, I look forward to design sustainable, inclusive & memorable spaces.
