emPOWERING Manchester
How can we re-insert carbon back into the ground below Manchester, and implement improved policies to enable Greater Manchester to reach net zero by 2038?
Greater Manchester’s mayor, Andy Burnham, has pledged to make the county carbon neutral by 2038 in a bid to tackle climate change and help the UK become carbon neutral by 2050, in line with the United Nations’ Conference of Parties goals.
Strategies in place include the Greater Manchester 5 Year Plan which sets out how this goal will be achieved. The 5 Year Plan outlines the county’s ambitions, however methodologies as to how this will be implemented are not specified.
This thesis project identifies specific methods, in line with the GM 5 Year Plan, to achieve this target, beginning at the site of a historic colliery and gasworks near the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester.
