A Feminist Factory of News
I am a multi-disciplinary designer looking to continue to build on my experience in theatre design and production. I was a recipient of the British Arts Council's Venice Fellowship Award in 2022, and have previously trained in Scenic Arts with the National Youth Theatre, worked within a technical venue team at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and lead design for a fringe theatre production in Manchester. Over the coming summer I am returning to Edinburgh as a Venue Manager, and have accepted a Stage Technician placement at the National Theatre in September, working in the renown Olivier Theatre. I also have many magical tales from my time working at Disneyland Paris as a character performer.
In PRAXXIS BA3, we placed our 'factories' within Corbusier's Radiant City, looking at how feminist means of production could disrupt the rigid scheme. My proposal looks at the modern media system. Who controls our news? Where does it come from? In today’s world, the support of the media is often available to the highest bidder. Simultaneously, unverified and insidious sources such as QAnon try to lead unwitting readers into a world of distrust, prejudice and conspiracy. This project proposes that we should radicalise the news, democratising its production and re-centring it at the heart of local community. By increasing public engagement with the process, trust is built. Slowing down the way we take in information, letting it instead form a part of our daily routines and journeys, prevents doom scrolling into a spiral of horrors. News is influence, influence is power, and power should belong to the people.
